enjoying the mild

If all had gone as planned, today would have been my first wedding anniversary. I’m so glad Maggie came along to knock over the applecart.

I finally got a good run in tonight. Last week seemed to roll through like a freight train, carrying all of my free time away in a smog of steampunky bustle. I don’t usually like to leave huge chunks of time between runs, but all of my plans went awry. I was supposed to run on Friday with the gym classes, but my whole prep was taken up with an on-call and a trip home to fetch a forgotten birthday cake. I knew it was over at that point: I’m not even going to pretend that I want to run after a slab of ice cream cake. Saturday was going to be my makeup day, but by the time we got home from the market I was just too tired. Falling over myself tired, going to the church for a chicken dinner because I don’t have the brain cells to feed myself and my kids tired. Sunday I tried to get out with the run club and my new jogging stroller, but things turned bad almost right away when I realized that my new toy pulled to the left like a recalcitrant shopping cart. After ten minutes of huffing and puffing up hills, fighting to keep the damn thing in a straight line, and listening to Maggie whine at me, I gave up and turned around. I was on my way back to the car when the front wheel popped off.

I don’t know what was worse: wrestling the wheel back on, or wrestling the baby back in the seat.

Tonight I went out with a full stomach of creamy pasta and a feeling of doom. It was a full week since I had a successful run, and I was doing it after a heavy rushed meal. (Although I did manage to dodge the beer. “It’s just a mild!” Mason insisted.) I was incredibly gratified to make it to the end of the course with nothing more severe than fatigue. Now I’m home, and I can enjoy the mild.
